Environment and Natural Resources Phase II
The ENR Master Plan, completed by Hoover Berg Desmond in 1994, provides a strategy for the multi-phase development of a natural resources complex, and furnishes a framework for the integration of the facilities within the University campus environment. Co-location of environmentally-focused research activities will optimize the University’s approach in earth and environmental science in ways that will enhance research, education, and the application of knowledge by society.
ENRII is planned to be the second phase of the Complex, and will house the Institute for Environment and Society (IES), School of Natural Resources (SNR), Office of Arid Lands Studies (OALS), Geography and Regional Development, and Atmospheric Sciences. The project is located near the northwest corner of Sixth Street and Fremont Avenue, and will be sited on the existing parking lot directly east of the Dennis DeConcini building (ENRB).
ENR II will further establish the University of Arizona as a preeminent institution in basic earth science and environmental programs research, student training, and application of environmental knowledge to problems of regional, national and global significance. The units located in ENRB and ENR II interact extensively in applications-based scientific research on climate variability and impacts over annual to millennial time scales. They share a strong interest in problems associated with arid lands around the world. Understanding the biophysical and societal dynamics of arid regions, as well as of drought in the world’s dry lands, are priorities for all of these units. ENR II will be a place where science-based response to societal needs, particularly the sharing of scientific knowledge and technologies, can occur.
STATUS: The project has completed facilities programming and is awaiting approval to enter the design phase.
