2009 Comprehensive Campus Plan Update Process

Overview

The 2003 Comprehensive Campus Plan is the current long-range physical development plan for the UA Main Campus. It addresses issues such as open space, circulation, transportation, parking, historic preservation, and sustainability, as well as provides design guidelines and recommended strategies for future infill development on The University of Arizona campus.

The 2009 Campus Plan Update revisited and updated issues addressed in the 2003 Plan. It is a companion document to the 2003 Plan, but will not supersede it.

Goals for the 2009 Comprehensive Campus Plan Update process included:

- Identification of issues that have emerged since 2003;
- Revisions which include new strategies related to transportation, traffic, and  pedestrian circulation;
- Revision of the Plan to reflect completed or planned buildings and open space projects;
- Identification of potential locations for future faculty/staff housing; and,
- Greater integration of the UA sustainability program and initiatives.

Highlights of the completed 2009 Comprehensive Campus Plan Update include:

- Reflection of changes that have occurred on campus in the last five years;
- Response to the need for increased density on the main campus;
- Identification of new growth opportunities and connections to downtown that will be created by the Modern Streetcar;
- Exploration of new housing options for faculty and staff near campus and downtown;
- Revisions to reflect changes in precinct layouts, including the fast-growing Arizona Health Sciences Center precinct;
- Continued focus on sustainability with regard to campus development; and,
- Emphasis on efforts to enhance campus/neighborhood edges and collaboration with the community on UA projects.

The firm of Ayers/Saint/Gross, the consulting firm that developed the 2003 Plan, was retained to coordinate this update. The consultant team and UA involved the many stakeholder constituencies on and off campus through a collaborative process modeled after the successful 2003 effort.
